Scholarship Highlight: Michael Rincon Bonillas

"My mission is to show everyone respect, love, and friendship through my ability to connect with others, and help build their own comprehensive financial plans."

“KW Next Gen makes it basically impossible for you not to be successful.”

Michael Rincon Bonillas didn’t have many opportunities growing up in the Bay Area as one of 400,000 foster kids in America. He knew he had dreams, but he had no idea how he was going to make any of them happen.

Michael first heard about KW Next Gen and Quantum Leap through his mentor, Scott Lehar, who volunteers at Just in Time for Foster Youth and is a KW Next Gen instructor. Michael needed help paying for college and Scott knew a he would be a perfect fit for our Fund My Mission Scholarship, and he’d be given some great tools on the way to qualifying.

At first, Michael was apprehensive – it seemed like a lot of work just to apply for a scholarship – but in the process, he realized the work itself, and the foundation he was building, would give him far more than a check ever could.

“I didn’t think I needed a mentor. I was actually kind of against the idea of a coach. But with my background, I didn’t really have a father figure in my household. I didn’t have someone to look up to. But having a good role model ended up being something I benefitted from.”

Michael’s favorite aspect of the curriculum was the 80/20 rule for how practical it is and how you can apply it to different scenarios. He likes to apply this rule to various aspects of his own life. Going to sleep early, working out, not partying, etc. Is it helping you?

What’s Next

Today Michael is a full-time graduate student at San Diego State University, focusing on accounting – he hopes to become an Audit Associate with RSM and he’s working towards becoming a CPA in 2025. In May he’ll walk across the stage and become part of the less than 1% of foster kids who earn a master’s degree.

We couldn’t be more proud!

“I do plan on being successful, and if I see a little brown kid out there like me, I’m gonna help him succeed, and I know that this structure and these principles work.”

What About You?

We’re ready to help you find success just like Michael! Quantum Leap online and in-person events are waiting for you to sign up – we’ll see you there.
